Monitoring Clears Another Court Hurdle

Despite lowering recidivism rates, saving tax dollars and preventing crime (“averted victimization” as an Urban Institute study terms it), electronic monitoring proponents continue to face fierce resistance from an entrenched bail bonds industry. As monitored release has expanded into nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia, ‘big bail’ has increasingly turned to the legal system itself to protect its turf. Most recently, this legal skirmish played out in New Jersey, where big bail was dealt a resounding defeat on July 9th, when a Federal court of appeals upheld the legality of New Jersey’s recent bail reforms.
